Free Kick Guide: Bending the Ball Around the Wall

There's nothing in football quite like a free kick that curls over the wall and dips into the top corner. In Free Kick Master, that curve is a tool you control, and once you understand how it behaves, the wall stops being a problem and starts being the thing you bend around.

How the Shot Works

Every free kick combines three things: direction (where you aim), power (how far and fast the ball travels) and curve (how much it bends in flight). The path you set is not the path the ball takes: curve pulls it sideways as it flies, and crucially, that bend gets stronger toward the end of the flight.

On a keyboard, and set the curve (left or right spin), and set the power, and Space strikes the ball. On touch, you swipe: the direction and length of your swipe set the aim and power, and the arc of the swipe sets the curve. Either way, the key insight is the same one real free-kick takers rely on: aim where the ball will end up, not where it starts.

The Curve Peaks Late

This is the whole trick. Curve does most of its work in the last stretch of flight, so a well-struck free kick looks like it's sailing wide of the post right up until it snaps back in. If you aim straight at the corner and add curve, the bend carries the ball past the target and wide.

Aim wider than the post and let it bend in. Start the ball outside the far post with inward curve, and the late swing brings it back onto target. The more curve you add, the wider you should start.

Whip Versus Power

It's tempting to hammer every free kick, but raw power is the enemy of curve. A ball travelling flat-out spends less time in the air, so it has less time to bend, and it's harder to place. A shot with a touch less power and a lot more curve (what commentators call "whip") is far more controllable, because the bend has time to develop and drag the ball into the corner.

  • Less power, more curve is your default for placement into a corner. It's the most repeatable way to score.
  • More power, less curve suits a direct effort through a gap or over the wall when the keeper is off their line.
  • Match power to distance. From further out you'll need more power just to reach the goal, so plan the curve around that, starting your aim even wider.

Beating the Wall and the Keeper

You have two routes past the wall: around it or over it. Bending around the outside is the safer, higher-percentage option, since the curve takes the ball wide of the wall and back in. Going over the top is spectacular but needs enough height and a sharp downward dip, or it clears the bar.

As you climb the levels, two things change: the wall gets taller and wider, and the goalkeeper reacts faster and further. That means the flat, central routes close up, and you're increasingly forced to earn your goals with real curve into the corners the keeper can't reach. Vary your target, because if you keep hitting the same corner the keeper starts cheating toward it early.

Practice Routine

  • Learn one corner first. Pick the top-right and repeat it until you know exactly how wide to start and how much curve to add. Consistency beats variety while you're learning.
  • Then mirror it. Groove the opposite corner so you're a threat to both sides.
  • Add the dipping effort. Once the around-the-wall shot is reliable, practise going over the top with heavy dip for the levels where the wall is huge.
  • Watch the flight, not the launch. Judge each attempt by where the ball ended up relative to your aim, and adjust your starting width next time.

The Reach Ceiling: The One Guaranteed Goal

Everything above is about out-guessing the goalkeeper. This section is about not having to. However quick a keeper is and however well they read you, there is a height above which their gloves physically do not go, and in Free Kick Master that height is drawn on the screen as a dashed green line across the face of the goal.

That line is not a hint or an approximation. The same shape that draws it is the shape the game measures your shot against, so a ball that crosses the goal above the line cannot be saved no matter which way the dive went. This turns the whole game on its head: instead of a guessing contest you cannot fully control, you get a target that is guaranteed if you can hit it.

Why it isn't a free goal

Because the crossbar does not move. The safe strip runs from the top of the keeper's reach to the bar, and it is narrow. Miss it low and you are back into the guessing game against a keeper who is now covering that side; miss it high and the ball clears the bar and costs you a life. It is a genuine skill target rather than an exploit, which is exactly what you want.

Use the aiming ring to check yourself. It turns green the moment your projected path clears the reach, so you get confirmation before you commit rather than a surprise afterwards. If it is still amber, either lift the shot or accept that you are attacking a corner and place it accordingly.

One more detail worth knowing: power narrows the reach horizontally. A harder strike arrives sooner and gives the keeper less time to travel, so the shape you are trying to avoid gets thinner as you wind up. Height and power are two different solutions to the same problem, and the best free kicks in this game usually take a little from each rather than everything from one.

How the Keeper Improves Every Goal

Each goal you score moves you up a level, and each level changes three specific numbers. None of them is hidden, and understanding them tells you when to change your approach rather than just trying harder.

The read. This is the chance the keeper commits toward the side you are actually shooting rather than picking a corner blind. Early on they are guessing more often than not. By the upper levels they are reading you most of the time, and the scatter in their guess narrows too, so even a wrong read is wrong by less than it used to be.

The reaction delay. A keeper does not move the instant the ball is struck; there is a beat while they pick up the flight. That beat is generous at level one and shrinks with every goal. It is the reason a shot that squeezed past a stationary keeper early on now meets one already travelling.

The dive speed. Every goal adds a shade or two to how fast the keeper covers ground left to right. The dive is timed so that half the elapsed time is half the distance, which sounds like a technicality but is the reason the speed increase is something you feel rather than read about. A slow keeper genuinely arrives late; a quick one is already in the corner.

The eight-pip reflex meter in the corner of the screen shows where the current keeper sits on that scale. Read it before every kick, because it tells you which strategy is still viable. When the pips are low, corners are worth attacking and you can pick a side with confidence. When they are nearly full, stop trying to beat the keeper sideways: they will get there. That is the point at which the dashed line stops being a bonus option and becomes the plan.

Reading the Wall

The wall grows with your level, adding a defender roughly every second goal up to five, and it shifts position between kicks. Both details are actionable if you look before you swipe rather than after.

Check which side of the goal the wall is covering. A wall shaded toward one post leaves more room on the other, and a shot bending into that space needs less curve and therefore less precision than one fighting around the crowded side. Taking the easier route is not cowardice, it is how professionals pick their corner.

Watch the height too. A short wall can be gone over comfortably; a five-man wall on a level where the keeper is also quick is the situation that forces a genuine decision. That is the moment to consider going around rather than over, because the flight that clears a tall wall arrives steeply and has less room to dip inside the bar.

The one thing to avoid is treating the wall as scenery. Players who lose lives to blocked shots almost always struck before looking, and a blocked free kick costs the same life as a wild one over the bar.

A Session That Actually Builds Skill

Repetition without a plan produces very little. If you want your best score to move, structure the practice.

Ten kicks, one target. Pick the top-right corner and take ten in a row at it, changing nothing but your starting width. You are not trying to score ten, you are trying to learn how far outside the post the ball has to start for a given amount of curve. Count how many finished on target rather than how many went in.

Ten kicks, mirrored. Do the same for the top-left. Most players are noticeably worse on one side, and finding out which is worth more than any amount of general practice.

Ten kicks above the line. Ignore the corners entirely and try only to place the ball in the strip between the keeper's reach and the bar. This is the shot that saves you when the reflex meter is full, and it is the one almost nobody practises deliberately.

Then play a real run. Judge each kick by where the ball finished relative to where you aimed, not by whether it went in, because a goal from a badly-judged kick teaches you nothing and a near-miss from a well-judged one teaches you a lot.

It marks the top of the goalkeeper's reach. A shot that crosses the goal above that line is beyond the dive whatever the keeper guessed, so it is the one guaranteed goal in the game. The catch is that the strip between the line and the crossbar is narrow.

They show how sharp the current keeper is on an eight-point scale, filling up as you score. Low pips mean corners are still worth attacking; nearly full pips mean the keeper will beat you sideways and you should be aiming above the reach line instead.

They read the shot after it is struck, not your aim before it. What changes with level is how often that read is correct, how quickly they start moving and how fast they travel. A keeper still in motion when the ball arrives genuinely misses it, which is why power matters.
